New Zealand Migrant Investment Visas

Why Invest in New Zealand?

New Zealand’s global index ranking reflects the country’s thriving, stable economy and a political system committed to economic freedom. Advanced technology, agri-foods, tourism, hotel development and infrastructure are strong investment sectors. With a policy framework that sustains a high-degree of economic resilience, an openness to global trade and investment, innovation and ease of doing business, combined with an unmatched quality of lifestyle, New Zealand is an attractive place for global investors.

Pathways to New Zealand Residency and Citizenship

There are currently two investor pathways to qualify for New Zealand residency using investments as a point of entry.

  • The Active Investor Plus Visa Category – this category incentivises direct investment in New Zealand through a weighting system for different types of investments.
  • The Parent Investor Category – In 2023 / 2024, more than 140 000 people immigrated to New Zealand. Some of their parents, wanting to enjoy and experience this sought-after destination with their children and grandchildren, will follow.

The Active Investor Plus Visa

An acceptable investment portfolio for the Active Investor Plus Visa requires an investment of funds which:

  1. Are not for the personal use of the applicant,
  2. Are invested in New Zealand and in New Zealand currency,
  3. Are invested in either one of more of the following:
    • Listed equities,
    • Philanthropy,
    • Managed funds,
    • Direct investments in non-listed companies

To be eligible, the minimum investment threshold is NZ$15 million or its weighted equivalent. There are also maximum investment thresholds for the different investment types, and investment types can be combined to meet the requirements. However, with good planning and advice it may be possible to launch a successful Active Investor Plus Visa application with NZ$5mil instead of NZ$15mil.

Parent Investor Visa

The parents of a New Zealand permanent resident or citizen may apply through the Parent Investor Category. Typically, it is not as straightforward as it sounds; I recommend speaking to a trusted immigration adviser before launching an application.

This application requires a minimum investment of NZ$1 million for four years, a settlement fund of NZ$500,000 plus an annual income of NZ$60,000 (equivalent) per year during the four-year period.
